...creative industries policy rationales and support structures across Europe

Creative industries have certainly been around for a while– although under different headings. They constitute a natural, deep-rooted component in all economies. While there has always been interest in some of its subindustries – most notably in design, architecture, cultural industries – the overall size of the CI has not been fully recognized until they were subsumed under this heading. This study reviews the policy rationales for supporting creative industries and the respective support structure in the EU member states.
The survey of Creative industries support structures has shown a broad use of the term creative industries but quite marked differences in the approach to CIs between old and new member states and policy interventions.
The survey is based on 49 European institutions of which 59% orginated from EU15. The share of ministries among respondents was 65%. Additionally 4 in depth case studies (Austria, Estonia, Spain, Sweden) are presented. The study can be downloaded here.
